DEVELOPMENTAL DUPLICATIONS DD
This latest identified genetic disorder in Angus Cattle has just
been notified to Angus NZ members and so far there has not
been time to test for this defect.
The DD gene mutation was discovered by Professor Jon Beever
of the University of Illinois, who has been working on this
issue over the past four years. This was in conjunction with
Australian researchers who had been presented with deformed
calves unrelated to any previous Genetic Defects.
In a nutshell, the board of Angus NZ is of the view that the best
way of reducing DD, and in fact all other identified defects, is
for Angus NZ Members to use GeneProb results and strategic
DNA testing to identify non-carriers as the preferred
future parents. An accurate diagnostic test to identify DD
has been developed and which Angus NZ is working to secure
for use here in the near future. The new DD mutation is not
expected to be more than a short-term problem for breeders
to deal with.
Peters Angus will be actioning all recommendations & rule
changes made by the Board of Angus NZ, to best manage this
latest defect.
