INTRODUCTION - STONEBURN HEREFORD
Stoneburn Hereford Stud is a 1440 hectare property
situated in the little area of Stoneburn which is 20km
West of Palmerston in East Otago. Altitude is about
400 metres and rainfall approximately 700mm
average. Along with our 300 stud cows and 65 heifer
replacements and the bulls we also run 3000 ewes and
1200 hoggets.
Stoneburn Hereford Stud was established in 1991
with an initial purchase of twenty cows from Lindsay
Tregonnings Mill Creek Stud. Soon after we purchased
heifers from Laurie and Sharon Paterson’s Waikaka Stud
and then a heifer from Waiau and Kiwi Studs. In 1993
we picked twenty cows from Blair Laurie’s Rothiemay
Stud, also cows and heifers from John Cooks Norfolk
Stud dispersal. Over the years we have added cows
from Braxton and recently a heifer from Leelands and
Westholm.
Sires that have made an impression on the Stud
have been - Monymusk Ellis Park. Moneymusk Louis.
Stoneburn Cadillac. Stoneburn Kauri. Recently bulls
from Kairuru and Capethorne Studs have been used
and at times during the breeding programme we have
also used Artificial Insemination including bulls Limehills
Hogan, Maugahina Oaks, Days Robin Hood, Okawa
Hogan and Allendale Anzac K4. In recent times we
are using three new Kairuru bulls (Kairuru Leeds, Latta
and Mehrtens) as well as Matariki 150690. Moneymusk
Kinnard, Stoneburn 160132, Otapawa Ammo, Matariki
Knight 170438 and Stoneburn Powerplay 170029.
Originally the Stud was formed as a hobby, breeding
bulls for our commercial herd and selling the odd bull
privately. As time has gone by, the decision to have
a bull sale was made. The main focus now is to breed
a bull, that is not too big in frame, but quiet, sound,
good bone and with plenty of meat. A bull that I am
confident will do the job for the hill country farmer.
Look forward to seeing you at Stoneburn on the Friday
28th May
