INTRODUCTION - WAIMARA ANGUS
Tom and Sally, along with their family would like to extend a warm welcome to their annual
      Angus Bull sale.
Looking back on last years introduction and what a difference a year can make – while
in the end we did manage to have a near normal sale it was a mission getting there!
Sometimes though, these challenges encourage us to adapt both as an industry and a
business and so again this year we will, alongside our live auction be offering the BIDR
online sale platform as an alternative.
Covid aside the 2020/2021 season has been challenged yet again by mother nature, over
the past 18 months we have received only 63% of our usual rainfall a lot of which has
come in big dumps with months between rains. Despite this our calves have weaned well
and the sale bulls are looking great. The family really encourage you to come and view the
bulls before sale day if you are able, you can do this by way of appointment or by attending
our Open Day on the 21st May. We really love showing off our cows too so if you would like
to come and see them just let us know and it can definitely be arranged.
Waimara Angus has been breeding for over 30 years now residing across 2 diverse
properties from coastal East Otago to the hill country of Middlemarch – our cows shift
from sea level to 1800ft with ease. For biosecurity reasons a closed herd is also run
      apart from the sire bulls.
Whilst we are mindful of growth and carcass requirements for fattening beef cattle the
main priority of our breeding program is maternal function. Our belief in producing
balanced, fertile, structurally sound, efficient cattle that perform in tough conditions time
and time again still remains. All Waimara cows are farmed under commercial conditions
integrated with sheep there is a lot of pressure on our cows to perform efficiently,
therefore in order to stay in our breeding herd our cows have to get in calf as a rising
2-year-old, calve without difficulty, and get back in calf every year thereafter.
This year you will see catalogued bulls by our own Waimara bred sires particularly
Waimara 774 who has made quite an impact - used as a yearling before being purchased
by the Heckler family. Also Stern 145, a McKenzie son purchased in 2018 had his first
crop of sale bulls. Again, our belief in using proven NZ bloodlines is shown throughout the
      pedigrees catalogued.
Waimara Bulls are fully recorded on Breedplan which includes birth weight, 200, 400
and 600 day weights – we have a 4.5 Star recording rating out of 5. All cattle are C10 TB
status, have been muscle scanned by Bill and Judy Austin, and fertility tested by Ross at
Xcell breeding. In addition, we also provide a substantial, 3-year, moneyback, structure
and fertility guarantee – if our bulls aren’t stacking up to your expectations, we want to
      hear about it.
Out of interest, here is a quote Tom stumbled upon earlier this year which really resonates
with us and Waimara’s breeding philosophy - “Be not the first on whom the new is tried
nor the last to cast the old aside’’ - whilst we have both questioned and embraced all
the changes and technologies within our industry over the past 30+ years we never forget
our traditional ways, they are what have made us who we are today!
Our Waimara Family really look forward to a more normal sale on the 28th May. However,
don’t hesitate to get in touch anytime for a viewing and/or advice on which bulls will suit
your property/herd type - this is what we enjoy the most about breeding.
