COMPOSITE
cow’s ability to remain in the herd to a specific endpoint with the assumption that dry cows are culled”. We cull all dry cows.
A couple of simple examples.
The daughters from bulls in the top 25% for stability are more than twice as likely to remain in the herd as 6 year olds
compared to the bottom 25%
Put another way daughters from bulls in the top 25% for stability averaged almost two more calves in their lifetime
compared to daughters of bulls in the the bottom 25% which is economically huge in a cow breeding system
The only reservation we have at the moment is our linkage with the database. We have NZ bred and home bred animals in
the herd that we have now established online with the ASA. Those who have sires from the USA are going to rank higher
earlier than the home breds. However within a few years this will stablise and we are using as many bulls as we can that are
linked firmly to the database to improve this quickly.
