The Koanui Sale 2021

       Dear friends and fellow breeders,

What a strange year it has been. This time last year we were unsure as
to whether we could have an on farm sale in June. In the end, after many
communication updates, restrictions eased the night before the sale and a
great day was had by all on farm as usual. We have learnt so much about being
       adaptable and agile for change.
In New Zealand we have been very fortunate for where we live and that the
economy has continued to prosper. Farming has not changed, however, as we
continue to face multiple challenges from markets and climate but we still need to
expect the cattle we run to be the most efficient and productive animals that our
environment and genetics can sustain. This creates some exciting and frustrating
challenges that we believe our herd size and our diversity of genetics are able to
       address and solve.
We are making a significant investment in Genomics to identify the traits that each
animal offers while continuing to back it up with intensive performance recording.
We have invested over $40,000 annually in gene testing so this is no small
commitment for Koanui but we believe that in time it will give us the information
power for accurate selection that no other herd will have.
Koanui has prioritised phenotype, soundness and structure with balanced
genetics to produce cattle with longevity and sustainability across diverse
environments and breeding programmes. We operate a very informed and
economic farming system with priorities on fertility and performance.
Culling is also an essential aspect of breeding and this is the real benefit of having
numbers as we continually look for a reason to put an animal out and only the
very best get through. To be selected for mating, every one of our 800 registered
cows must raise a calf every year from two years of age. We calve over 280 two
year heifers annually and this is a vital part of our programme.
Health, performance and service and semen testing are key profit drivers
and Koanui makes considerable investment in these areas to give all clients
confidence and reassurance when purchasing a bull from us. Our commitment
and passion are demonstrated by our level of investment for the long term benefit
of our clients and our business.
We encourage you to join us on sale day. We very much look forward to being
able to share some hospitality with you and invite you to share our commitment to
the future of New Zealand’s beef industry by purchasing a Koanui Bull.

       Kindest regards
       Chris and Jennifer Chesterman
