FOREWORD
A
year ago we were in turmoil. 12 months on we have
endured one of the toughest years many of us will
face in terms of twin challenges of drought and the
global impacts of the pandemic. Funnily enough, many of us
have had one of our better years, farm gate prices have been
relatively good given the global economic situation and the
warm winter was kind, providing some valuable growth when
we needed it the most, good lamb survival across most regions
helped enormously too.
During the year we have seen some great progress in rewards
for quality beef, with Angus Pure working with Alliance and
their Handpicked programme to bring meaningful premiums
to those investing in quality beef genetics. We’ve talked about
it for a long time but now you really can get up to a dollar per
kilo premium for producing carcasses that tick the boxes for
colour, ph and marbling.
Also during the year has been the formation of the group
AngusPro. A group of breeders who have chosen to record
our cattle through Angus Australia, thereby tapping into an
association with great governance, resourcing, capabilities and
professionals with technical expertise. This can only benefit
our clients and our breeding programme. Importantly, this is
a move we have considered for almost 10 years and feel it is
the best move for our individual businesses considering our
international and progressive focus towards carcass trait cattle.
Have a read, there are several articles in the catalogue;
• Antagonistic Traits - The Totaranui bulls we have put into
the 2 year old sale have ideally been selected to have
good IMF but also above breed average for growth.
• Feed Efficiency
• What’s the Beef – it’s all coming together
• Gone Fishing – we are all different
It’s a great line up of bulls this year, we look forward to seeing
you again in June, please feel free to come and view the bulls
at your convenience.
Kind Regards

and the rest of the team here at Totaranui.
• Totaranui has mated yearling heifers for over 3
decades. Calving ease is inherent in our herd.
• All calves are tagged and weighed at birth –
accurate recording of birth weights.
• All cattle are i50k genomically tested which
includes sire verification. All females since 2014
born, which gives us a level of information for
each female as if she has already got up to 13
calves on the ground. All males since 2017 born,
this enhances the accuracies of the ebvs.
