THE IMPORTANCE OF INDEX VALUES SALE BULLS COMPARED TO BREED AVERAGE

$Index values have been developed to make it easier to determine which animals will be suited to your
production system and the particular markets you supply.

BREEDOBJECT calculates these indices, where it places relative emphasis on particular traits suited to
each particular production system or market.

In our Te Mania Bull Sale Catalogue we have presented three index values – The Self-Replacing Index
(SRI), AngusPure Index (API), and Heifer/Dairy Terminal Index (HDTI)

Self-Replacing Index ($ S.R.I) Estimates the genetic differences between animals in net profitability
per cow joined for an example commercial herd (self replacing herd run in a temperate environment)
in which some females are retained for breeding and surplus females, along with all males, are
slaughtered. Steers are assumed marketed at 525 kg live weight (280 kg carcase weight and 10 mm fat
depth) at 16 months of age.
The main drivers of profit weighted in the index are below (in order of economic importance):

                 • Direct and Maternal Calving Ease
                 • Growth
                 • Meat Yield
                 • Cow Survival
                 • Finishing Ability
                 • Fertility
                 • Cow Efficiency
Selection on this index will move the cowherd towards one with excellent reproductive efficiency,
rearing progeny with moderate to high growth rates and high yielding carcases.
AngusPure Index ($ A.P.I) Estimates the genetic differences between animals in net profitability per
cow joined for an example commercial herd (self replacing herd run in a temperate environment)
in which some females are retained for breeding and surplus females, along with all males, are
slaughtered. Steers are assumed marketed at 565 kg live weight (280 kg carcase weight and 10 mm fat
depth) at 20 months of age with a significant premium paid for marbling.

This premium beef index is suitable for a self replacing commercial herd targeting the production
of steers and heifers for a premium beef product range. This is relative to Farmpure supply to
Progressive’s Finest Angus Range, which is sold in Countdown supermarkets throughout New Zealand.

Heifer/Dairy Terminal Index ($ HDT.I) Estimates the genetic differences between animals in net
profitability per female joined in an example herd where all progeny are marketed. All progeny are marketed
at approximately 510 kg live weight (280 kg carcase weight and 7 mm fat depth) at approximately 24
               months of age.
